Last Friday night, I finished writing Up From The Grave, Night Huntress book seven. Usually typing “The End” brings me nothing but joy because it’s the literary equivalent of crossing the finish line in a marathon, but this time, my joy was tinged with a little sadness. Why?
Up From The Grave will be the last Cat and Bones novel.
Short reason why: I’m mostly an organic writer, as I detailed here, so several years ago when I plotted the skeletal outline for the series, I estimated that it would take a total of nine books to finish Cat and Bones’s story arc. Turns out, I finished it sooner.
For those of you who want the long reason, keep reading.
I started writing Cat and Bones’s story with no specific number of books in mind because I was unpublished and thus writing them only for me. The idea for one book turned into two, then two books turned into three, and then boom! In 2006, my dream came true by landing a publishing contract. At that time, my publisher only committed to two books, but I didn’t care. I had more stories to tell, so I kept writing them. Later, reader support meant my publisher kept buying them, but still, I didn’t have a specific number of books planned. I only had a story in my head that wasn’t finished yet.
Publishing is a business, so that sort of vagueness didn’t work :). Contracts required written outlines and readers very reasonably wanted to know how long of a series they were getting into. Back in early 2010, based on remaining plot points that I’d written down, I estimated that it would take a total of nine Cat and Bones books to tell their complete story. This is what I announced to readers.
Then, later in 2010, my publisher invited me to do an extended Cat and Bones novella for an anthology with Lynsay Sands. I’m a big fan of Sands, so I said yes. Once I’d finished writing Home For The Holidays, however, I realized because it was so long (nearly half a book!) and it contained a major series revelation, I would no longer need to write a ninth Cat and Bones book. The novella took care of that part of my story arc, and so when it came out in late 2011, I told readers that Cat and Bones’s story would now end at book eight.
Honestly, if I had to do it all over again, I would have written a different story instead of using a plot line from my overall series arc. Many of my readers skipped the anthology because, as they told me later, they preferred full-length novels to novellas. Because of that, I expect a lot of “Huh?!” responses to that plot-point recap in Up From The Grave. It was my mistake to include a significant reveal for the Night Huntress series in a novella, and I am sorry for that. If it’s any consolation, Home For The Holidays will be available this November as a single title for $1.99, so interested readers will soon be able to get it at a very low rate.
Let’s fast forward to 2013, when it was time to get back to Cat and Bones after spinning off two books in the Night Prince series. About halfway through writing Up From The Grave, I was stunned to realize that I was already done with all the plot points in book seven’s outline. At that moment, I had a decision to make: write “filler” plot to finish book seven without dipping into book eight’s story line, or continue on into the planned ending of the Night Huntress series.
I called my editor and told her that I was continuing on, which probably meant that Cat and Bones’s story was ending in Up From The Grave. She gave her blessing because, like me, she agreed that it was better to end their series early with the story I always wanted to tell, than to stretch it out into another book by writing insincere filler. Just to be sure that I did fit in everything, we agreed not to announce this to readers until I was done writing the book.
And here we are.
At this point, some of you may be thinking “Good, I never want to read a story that represents a halfhearted effort by the author.” Or some may be thinking “Good, I was getting sick of Cat and Bones anyway.” In case any of you are thinking “Wait a minute, you promised more Cat and Bones books, so you need to live up to your word!” please know that I’m trying to do best by you, and all my readers, by ending their story here.
It’s difficult emotionally for me to say goodbye to Cat and Bones. They’ve lived in my head for over a decade, and closing the chapter on them feels like bidding farewell to very old, very good friends. In addition to the emotional angle, there’s a financial one. Each new book in the Night Huntress series has a built-in fan base that nets me damn good money, and I like money. A lot. But not enough to milk my readers over a story I don’t believe in. As an author, I have no control over whether readers love my books, like them, feel ambivalent, or hate them, but I do have control over choosing to only write stories that I love. To me, that’s a far more important promise to keep.
I apologize for previously overestimating the total number of books in the Night Huntress series. It wasn’t my intention to mislead or disappoint readers. It was truly an honest mistake.
Does this mean you’ll never see Cat and Bones again after Up From The Grave? Well, not in a full novel with them as the main characters. They may show up as side characters in spin-off novels, as they did in First Drop of Crimson, Eternal Kiss of Darkness, Once Burned and Twice Tempted. I’m also not completely ruling out a future short story with them, but that’s a big maybe. It’s nothing I’m planning on at this time.
If you have other questions, feel free to ask them below. If you want to rant at me over my decision, you can, but it won’t change my mind. Also, emailing me story ideas won’t result in another Cat and Bones novel. This isn’t a case of writer’s block or me being out of ideas: I’m done with the story I set out to tell, which means Cat and Bones are at the place I always intended them to be. Any sadness I feel over that is overshadowed by my happiness at getting to take them there.
I hope readers enjoy the final leg of their journey, but whether you continue on to the end or you got off years ago, let me give a huge, heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined Cat and Bones along the way. I know for me, it’s been an amazing ride, and I thank God for giving me the opportunity to share it with you :).

Wow this is sad news. I never wanted the series to end alrhough I understand. I have read the series so many times now that I think I have your books memorized. I thought maybe that we would learn more about Timothy someday, one of the four mates that came across to the US with bones. I definitely want to hear more about Ian and I hope he never settles down! On another note I will meet you someday even if I have to fly to one of those conventions you attend to do it! Thanks for writing!
Rebecca says
It’s sad for me to hear that Cat and Bones’ story is ending with your next novel, but it clearly shows that you’re a good person to your loyal fans for not just putting out ‘filler’ books to get more money until you reach your book total. I commend you for that.
I will definitely be buying any future books you release.
Saya says
okay I read and let me say right now I am crying. I am going to savor every last page of the last book. I will miss this series sooooo much. I too feel that bones and cat and everybody else (well at least all the characters who are on the side of good) are my friends and I will miss them so dearly. thank you for writing this series in the first place. I have treasured and loved this series and it will be sad to see it go as well as my friends from it. Thank you soooooooooooooo much Jeaniene Frost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope you continue to write more books and hope to possibly see cat and bones again in a spin-off novel. I hope they have a good ending and a wonderful rest of their lives.

This was a good series to read. I started reading them while deployed to Afghanistan. It was a good escape from life there. I look forward to your next series.

As much as I love Cat and Bones, I trust that a sincere, wonderful author should choose when to end their story. As long as they get an incredible HAPPILY EVER AFTER I’m good and feel honored to have read their story from the beginning. 🙂

An artist always knows when a work is complete. I hope some characters will continue on in other books to see what their fates become… Ian, Tate, Juan, etc.
I find the most enjoyable reads are those that characters have some sort of resolution in their stories, Cat and Bones deserve a proper ending that their artist finds fitting. Looking forward to their final story… and many more works by Ms. Frost.

I have thoroughly enjoyed everyone of your books! It is sad that Cat and Bones will end, but, I greatly appreciate you stopping the series since you feel it is time. Filler is not a good read. I will continue to always be a big fan of yours and look forward to all your future endeavors! Thanks for the great reads!!
Jax says
Thank you, Jeaniene. So eloquently put. You do an amazing service to your readers by being honest and following your heart regarding Cat and Bones. I had not followed the series initially, as my reading time is very limited working two jobs while I build an event business.
Writing press releases, contracts, insurance estimates, negotiating (hopefully free or near free)event space, advertising, setting up facebook and web pages, creating, borrowing or purchasing art and graphics, casting calls, casting characters, costuming, directing and finally presenting the event all the while working a 40-hour, 8 – 5 job. Not complaining, that’s just “my world” right now.
Reading, my husband Tom and our cats are how I survive and meet each day with a smile on my face. (OK, sometimes that’s a borrowed graphic, too.) Had I not wanted to know how Teddy Brunswick met his bride I never would have met Cat and Bones and found them to be such terrific people. Nor would I have met Lelia and Vlad – who, by the way, are taking up all of my lunch hours as I read through “Once Burned” again. I am truly grateful to you for all of your work I have read.
I believe that books write themselves. Yeah, we think we’re imagining and writing down the arch and the outline and the story, but really, THEY, the characters, take it where they intend to go and if we’re lucky, and took good notes, it matches the map they gave us in the first place with the germinating idea and various plot points. I believe you when you say, The End. I also know that there’s always another moment. Just because we live 1,000 miles apart doesn’t mean we don’t chat on the phone, by text, e-mail and tweet about where we are and what we’re doing. Thank you for 7 wonderful books about people that are completely real and alive in my imagination. Jeaniene, I eagerly look forward to what’s next. Until then, I’ll be at the Cameron Park Renaissance Fayre, Sept. 7 & 8. Stop by, I’ll have a pass for you. Jax
Sara says
Oh boy. I entirely respect your decision and you have my thanks for deciding not to extend it unnecesary, but you’ll forgive me if I say I am sad, I would have liked more books, but not more than I would have like good books at the same lavel you’ve given us before.
So I guess, I’ll just re-read them on ocassion 😀
Stephanie says
I’m sad that it’s ending but that is the beauty of good books. You can always go back to the beginning. Thanks for six great novels and I’m looking forward to the seventh. 🙂

I love the Cat and Bones series and am very sad to see it end, but I am glad you choose to end it without needless filler. I can’t wait for book 7 and with it the end of the series, but I hope you go back to these awesome characters in short stories and maybe even a book for Ian!

Kind of. Sort of.
But I thank you for the very bottom of my heart. Thank you for sticking up to your story. The story YOU want to tell US. I’m not a fan of series-ending books and I probably never will. I’ve got some series ending books sitting on my shelves for as long as I can remember and then some.
But Cat & Bones? Jeaniene Frost?
THESE were the characters, this was the author who introduced me to paranormal romance, adult paranormal romance.
You made me venture into this scary thing that we call “let’s try a new thing” I had only read Young Adult books at the time but then, back at a very very dark and lonely place in the only bookstore we have in our country, I found Halfway to The Grave. And OH! Do I thank God for that!
I’ve been doomed since then. You’ve probably ruined every other PR author out there or book character out there. I don’t like to compare but I can’t help.
You’re talented and amazing and simply awesome.
So thank you, thank you. For Cat, for Bones for delivering stunning and incredible stories.
But most of all, THANK YOU FOR WRITING.
The PR book community and the reader community in general wouldn’t be the same without you.
You’ve changed it and you’ve left your mark.
Your stories and you will forever live in my mind and heart.
Just as they took a part of you I believe they’re taking a part of ourselves (readers) as well.
Thank you so very very much!!

I have to say I wish they would be more this series has been my favorite and I can’t wait to read Up From the Grave. But I understand your reasoning I have read other series that has lagged on and I’m losing interest in them but I will miss cat and bones I have gotten friends of mine reading it. You are a great author and I have trouble sitting down your books.
I have just one question are you going to be working on another series other than the ones you have right now?
Jeaniene says
Yes, I’m writing a new series now. Details here: https://jeanienefrost.com/2012/12/exciting-news/
Betty says
Oh NO!..I Don’t know if I can be satisfied with just one more book to go. I understand though, and as such, I would rather you end the series than to print filler. How I hate to read filler! Cat and Bones has been one of my favorite of all the series I read, and I read a lot of series. I have re-read your series so many times and will continue to do so throughout the years to come. Since this will be the last one I will go back and start from the beginning again so will be ready to read the final one.
Thanks so much for such a great great series. I have read all the other off-shoot series and can’t wait for Vlad’s last book.
You can be sure that I will be reading each and every one of your books including the ones to come.
Mary Lee Burgess says
I am so SAD to see them end. I love these characters. i reread these books often and will continue to do so. With that said, one thing that has bothered be about the books is the fluctuation in Bones’s age.
In the first book Bones was a vampire for 217 yrs and 24 when turned. When his arm was ripped off by Mencheres in At Graves’s End he said “247 yrs I’ve had that arm. Didn’t think to lose it while trying to rip your head off”. In Home for the Holiday’s, Cat threw Bones a birthday party in which he turned 245.
Can you please tell me how old he is in your head. It is one of those mistakes that bothers me. But fear not. I blame the editor.
I can tell that you really mean it that this is the end. I do hope that in time that you feel that there is more to tell about these people that so many love.
I hope that In the final book that if Tate is rude or curses Bones the way he does so often that Cat corrects him the way Bones would if ANYONE would insult her. That would make the final book feel complete to me. I look forward to sneak peaks in the future with the NHW novels. Thank you for sharing their life with us.
Jeaniene says
Don’t blame my editor – those errors are all mine. For starters, originally, there was a seven year separation between Cat and Bones (between Halfway to the Grave and One Foot in the Grave). Then I changed that separation period to four years during pre-publication edits of One Foot in the Grave. However, I never updated it in the previously-written version of At Grave’s End, which was actually the original fourth Cat and Bones novel. After writing AGE, but before One Foot in the Grave came out, I ended up shelving an entire book-length plot point and rewriting At Grave’s end to make it the third novel. So more “series” timeline was messed up.
If all the above sounds confusing, it was to me, too :). That’s why Bones’s age has discrepancies. However, his age in Home For the Holidays reflects his correct age, as if I’d never messed it up in previous books.
Kimberley Lovelace says
I just want to say good for you and I love the Cat and Bones books. I also like very much the Once Burned and Twice Tempted, I was wanting to know when the next one well be released?

The final Vlad and Leila novel won’t be out until probably the end of next year.

I’ve been trying to read your books for years now. I guess the timing has been off for my mood each time. Recently I came across them in audiobook format at the library, and found that the timing was right this time around :0). (Btw the narrator chosen for you books is AWESOME!!) now I’m scrounging every book store I can to buy everyone. I am sad that I recently found e Bones and Cat series and your getting ready to end it, but have enjoyed everything else you’ve written, so I’m now excited to see what comes next. Thanks and great job!!

I am definitely sad to see Cat and Bones end. I have really enjoyed reading their story. Would I love to see more Cat and Bones, absolutely, but if their story is over than their story is over and treasure the time I have spent with them. And will treasure the time I will spend with them in the future, considering they are one of my favorite series and have read them more than once.

Aaawwwhhhh…I’m so addicted in reading Cat & Bones stories! I really enjoyed their adventures and loving relationship. I do not understand the need to end their storyline. So long as you continue to write you won’t know if a new and/or fresh plots will lead you to do another book about the couple and their friends & relatives. There is no need to limit yourself. You’ve created an iconic character that deserves more adventure that will take your readers like me with them…

I am sad that the ride will be over but I’m very happy she will not be doing a filler book. I hope to learn more about Timothy (who went off looking for Cain), Ian, Justina, and possibly a little back story on Rodney? Please? I love Jeaniene Frost’s writing style. In fact One Foot in the Grave (I accidentally read the second book first) was the first book I EVER read on my own. Up until 9th grade I never read for pleasure because I was such a slow reader. I have gotten faster because of practice but I still savor each and every page. The Night Huntress Novels got me addicted to reading and I always have at least one Cat and Bones book in the glove box of my car or when I’m traveling in my dufflebag/suitcase. Thank you for everything Jeaniene Frost I own all of your books and novella’s I will follow your writing forever!

Personally I very much appreciate that! I love that your being completely honest. Im not going to name names but I have followed a certain author and one of her series for years. She just finished the series this year and I feel completely cheated. I could be wrong but I feel as though she totally milked it for all it was worth. I will never read another book written by her again for that reason alone. Im very happy to read that part of your announcement. THANK YOU! 🙂 I will always be a fan of your books and will continue being a devoted follower! 🙂

Thank you so much for Cat and Bones. I was introduced to your books by first reading First Drop Of Crimson and falling in love with Spade. I also fell in love with your writing style, and was determined to start at the beginning. I have read all of the books, which I found extremely hard to put down, as they begin hitting the ground running and never stop until the last page! The romance in each story is beautiful and yet gritty and real, raising your series to the elite group of paranormal romance. I really look forward to whatever you have for us next!

While I am sad that there will only be one more book in this series, I want to say thank you for sharing the story!
I also want to say thank you for writing it. Before I found this series, I hated reading. I found it difficult to stay focused, and found it boring. One trip to the book store for my cousin later and a sale going on buy two get one free (she only needed two books) I happened across the book “One Grave at a Time” and decided to purchase it. Little did I know, I had just purchased a book I couldn’t read because it was a series, and you can’t read a book in the middle of a series without reading the ones previous to it.
I went to my local library, and borrowed the first book- and I loved it! I have never found a book that kept me interested, and kept me up all night reading it. I couldn’t put it down until I finished the book. I returned the book to the library the next day, and went back to the bookstore and bought the full series.
So thank you! I look forward to reading Up From the Grave. I also look forward to anything else you decide to write, because you have given me a gift far more precious than an amazing story- you helped me to enjoy reading.

Please accept my thanks that you are NOT writing a filler book. Too many series are ruined when an author writes beyond their original story line.
I must admit, though, I have loved all the Cat and Bones books. I loved watching them grow individually and as a couple, and I will be sad to read the last book. But as long as you finish their story, I will smile and treasure all of the books you have given us over the years. I also look forward to reading your new series. Please continue to make thoughtful decisions about writing – we readers appreciate it more than you know.

Dear Jeaniene,
Thank you for a wonderful series and spin-offs. I would be very sad to see Cat & Bones go. But if you as an author feel that it’s time – so be it. The Vlad “Night Prince” was supposed to have 3 books, is it still correct?
All the characters are like best friends and it bitter sweet to say good by.
However I’m looking forward to you new Harlequin series and will follow you wherever you go, Jeaniene. Best of luck!

Dear Jeaniene,
I have loved the stories of Cat and Bones and I’m saddened that this will be the last. Like many of your fans I feel a part of the family. I read and reread your books and one day hope to create something so wonderful that touches so many. Most likely I’ll write to please no one but myself. I know it’s not easy to get published and just the thought that theses wonderful books might not have made it to print is the stuff of nightmares.
I’d never try to change your mind or think of someone else continuing in your stead. The characters live through you and only you can decide where there happy or not (hopefully happy) ending leaves them. I’m sure every fan will envision what happens after, the way books and movies leave us to wonder what is next.
I’m sure I will get into your new works at some point. I expect a morning period after the much anticipated last book.
Would be nice to give you a big hug and thank you for Cat, Bones, Spade, Denise and the list just goes on.
Keep your fingers crossed one day I join you as a writer and not just a Shiba Inu owner.
Only the best to you,
Diane

I am sorry to see the end of such a great run, but I have read books that were “forced” just to satisfy a contract, and you could tell the author wasn’t really in their “world”. And I couldn’t lose myself in those books either. So I guess I’d rather have 7 great books than 8 or 9 that just petered out. It takes some of the magic away.
I am chomping at the bit for the next Night Prince book. I also am curious about your new series. If your heart goes into this one as much as it obviously did in Cat and Bones’s stories, then it promises to be a FANtastic run!

Thank you for writing such great novels and for not writing filler. I am very sad to see the end of Cat and Bones I love reading about them and will miss their stories but I am happy you are stopping now and ending it the way you always saw it ending rather than stretching the story. First, Thank You for sharing Cat and Bones and their stories with those who love your writing. Thank you also for being honest with your fans and I am one. I am sad to see them go but I hope to see them or get updates on what’s happening with them and all the others in their world. I fell in love with Bones and then Cat from the first book and enjoyed going on their adventures as you wrote them. All the characters you introduced and fleshed out through the books deserve their own books if you run out of stories to tell. hint.. hint.. LOL I had the privilege of writing reviews for Once Burned and Twice Temped for Bitten By Books. Check it out if you get a chance. I hope you enjoy it and can see how much I love your stories and characters. And as much as I love Bones and I do, Mencheres is a unique individual too, but please there is only one Vlad, Who am I kidding I love them all! So I hope there will be more adventures for all three and their significant others as well as everyone else in their world to get into and out of. Again, thank you for creating Cat and Bones, they will live in my imagination forever. I respect your talent, love your stories, and appreciate your style and look forward to the future reading your work.
Vicki Jasprizza says
I had a feeling, after reading the last book, that Cat and Bones would end soon but am still sad about it. I am very attached to them and will miss them, however I think it’s best to finish story strongly, I have read and lost interest in other series when the author has kept it going just for the sake of it. On the other hand I do look forward to our next adventure.
JC Henry says
I am glad Cat and Bones have a final story. There are a few series I have read and loved that left me high and dry. I wonder if you plan to continue to write about their world. I didn’t read all your replies. I prefer to check your website periodically.
JC Henry says
Will Up From the Grave be an audiobook as well as print? Will they be available the same time?
Jeaniene says
Yes, Up From The Grave will be out in audio, and yes, at the same time as the other formats.
raquel says
Will u still do the Night Prince novels, I have enjoyed everyone of your cat & bones stories but I also enjoyed spades and mencheres story and I
Love Vlad and Lelia so if those continue and cat and bones don’t die in book 7 then I’m sure they will make cameos every now and then. Thank you for a number of sleepless nights that I refused to put down my book or tablet to sleep cause I had to get to the end of the story.
Jeaniene says
There is one more Vlad and Leila novel. Releasing probably the end of next year.
Angelia says
CAB
Yes…can’t wait to read book 3…I have never read a Cat and Bones book…I was in a different series of Karen Marie Moning…so when I picked up the prince book..I fell in love…thank you for allowing me to take this journey…fantastic writing!
Lynn Bollinger says
Glad to know I’ll see more of Vlad et al. I’ve liked his character all along. So appreciate your work and admire your integrity. Keep ’em coming! Respects/ Lynn
Brandi Bufford says
I want to let you know that I will miss Cat & Bones, but thank you for letting us have this wonderful journey with them. It will be sad to say good bye, but I know they will live in this fans heart forever.
Abianna says
I am bummed this will be their last book but I am grateful I found their story. I’m going to have to read all the way from book 1 again. Thank you so much for writing their story and sharing it with us, as well as your other stories. Also, Ian is one of my favorite characters and I was hoping to get a side book on him like we got with other side characters. Will this be possible? (Please?) 😀 Again, thank you for sharing your wonderful talent with us readers!
Jeaniene says
“Maybe” on an Ian book. I have ideas, but we’ll see if he’s ready for them ;).
Elisa Canuti says
I was going to ask if there was an Ian book as he is a complicated character and we haven’t fully understood him since he hasn’t been talked about in depth.
Is it possible if you could tell us if you will write an Ian book?
But don’t be too sad that they are ending, everything does.
Thank you.
Abianna says
Woo! I hope he’s ready! 🙂 But something tells me he has his own agenda.
márcia c says
oi jeaniene.gostei de todos seu livros cat do bone, ais um que espero com muita ansiedade e um livro sobre o ian tomara que escreva um livro sobre ele.
vselder says
I appreciate the thoughtfulness of not writing filler books in order to make more money. Way to stay true to your ethics and the fans. I wrote you a while back asking about a book about Ian. Will there be any Night Huntress World books featuring Ian as the main character in some capacity??
Jeaniene says
Ian book is a “maybe.” He’s moving toward that direction, but not there yet.
Teresa P. says
What about a story for Ian? He’s grown on me. And also what happened to Timothy? Will that ever be addressed?
Jeaniene says
“Maybe” for a book about Ian. As for Timothy, that’s a “maybe” too. I know what’s going on with him. Just not sure if/when I can write a book about it.
JO says
Thanks for the many hours of reading you’ve given me thus far with Cat and Bones. So sad that their story is ending, but what a great story it’s been.
Heather says
So many times writers continue story lines for characters that should have ended long before their time. I think it’s admirable for you to end a series when it was time to do so and to respect the fans enough to explain why. Thank you for telling us an enjoyable story and for sharing these characters that lived in your mind and found life on the written page. I look forward to your next journey and new characters in the future. Best of luck! I can’t wait to see what you come up with next.
Jacque Spintzyk says
I agree. The Stackhouse series should of ended WELL before it did. I was so unimpressed with the 2 before the final one that I refused to spend my money on the last one. So I am very happy you are sticking to the heart of your story.
I began re-reading the whole series again in anticipation of the new one!! About to start Eternal Kiss….hopefully this will lead me right into the new one while the stories are still fresh on my mind!
Thank you for writing such endearing characters!! I love these books!!
Kim says
It is sad that cat and bones are done, but i still have them on kindle and can keep reading them. I also love the stories on spade, vlad, and ian. I am glad i got hooked on the books for not many books nowadays have good plots. I hope they pop up in some books once in awhile. Thank you for their wonderful story. They are awesome.
Kim
Mildred says
I’m glad about Janine’s decision. I absolutely love Cat and Bones, but Janine has proven to be a great writer, so I will be enjoying her other books she is going to write as well. There is nothing worse then seeing your favorite story being destroyed in a filler book!
P Anderson says
I picked up the first Cat & Bones book at a garage sale of all places! I have purchased every book since including the side books and while I’m sorry to see them come to an end I can’t wait to see how it ends! Love them so much and thanks for the side books for other characters as well. You’re a great writer and while Cat & Bones come to an end it means you get to start a new beginning and I can’t wait to see what comes next for you.
Sherrie says
I have loved CAB from the beginning and will miss them but WHATEVER you wright, I will be reading. Thank you for sharing your worlds with us. 🙂
Kelly says
Sad about Cat and bones. Agree on the precious comments on Ian’s books. But out of curiosity, do you have plans for any new series, and if so will they paranormal romance, urban fantasy?
Jeaniene says
I am writing a new paranormal series. Some details about it here: https://jeanienefrost.com/brokendestiny/
Megan says
I completely understand not writing a story you are not fully invested in and I appreciate you even more for ending Cat and Bones in your terms. It’s your writing style that has sucked me into your world, not just the characters, so please keep writing whether it’s the Night Princes or something different. I’ll be there waiting to read the passion in your words (as well as hopefully listening to Tavia read them too).
Raven Twinn says
*cries*
I totally respect your decision and appreciate your explanation.
I just can’t get enough of this incredible world you’ve created.
I just bought the series AGAIN because I wanted it on my e-reader as well as paperback.
I’m in the midst of a re-read now.
I can’t wait to read the last.
P.S.- I married my Englishman with a red stone engagement ring. ♡
Jeaniene says
” I married my Englishman with a red stone engagement ring.”
Cool, and congrats!
Diane Dannenfeldt says
Well I will be sadden to see Cat & Bones end but it’s better to end on a full story then a partial & a filler. Just hoping that you don’t stop writing as I do love your books!
Angie_H says
I am totally behind in this news obviously! But I’d like to say that, though I’m so very sad that there will only be one more book when I wish there’d be 100, I’m much happier knowing that it will be a book minus crappy fluff filler. As that that exact thing happened with another author recently, that they had their contract extended by two or three books, and that’s exactly how many filler books that they had in the middle with maybe 3 minor plot points per books. And now, when many fans are angry about the filler, the end of the series came along with an ending that some suspected but the way it was executed was nothing more than stupid. But to make their fans feel better, the author is putting out some weird book that will tell what happened to all the other characters in the book, supposedly everyone other than the main character. I see this as a way to milk more money out of the fans, just as those filler books were, which is just disrespectful to every fan this author has ever had.
But you are being respectful, doubly so because you took the time to explain why the series is ending two books earlier than you originally planned. Maybe if I had known that you’d planned nine books and found out all of a sudden there was only seven I might have gotten upset. But still not anywhere near as upset as with the opposite situation as described above. So thank you Ms. Frost, for your consideration, your respect, your time, but mostly for you sharing this wonderful story and its spin offs with the world!! It has made for hours of fun and excitement, through the first and second readings, and now with the new book coming out, probably a third reading!!!
L says
Ian needs a book!

Diane Maglioli says
I am sorry to hear the end is coming for Cat and Bones, but I understand your reason. I hope you will begin a new series that we can love just as much as Cat, Bones, Spade, Vlad, and Mencheres. Thank you for a fabulous series.
Holly says
I love all of cat and bones books. I also love Vlad and Leila, i love them all menchres, kira, spade, denise, i think these were some of the best books i have read yet. I hate to see them end to. i would like to know what you are going to write after all of this. Please know these are my favorite books and i read them more than once. I hate to see cat and bones go but there is always an end to everything. I hope you write more stories about good looking vampires that are good, those are my favorite kind. Thank You Jeaniene Frost for all of your wonderful books. I also look forward to book 3 about vlad and leila. I like them as much as cat and bones. Love them all hard to have a favorite. thanks hope to be reading new novels from you in the future.
Hichem says
I am a big fan of y’r books Mr.Frost, sad to learn that cat and bones stories will end, happy for the respect you have for the fan’s and you fave the explanation why it end like this? hope in future stille have books on night huntresse world, specialy of ian and timothy. Ian we don’t konw his back story but we found him in the series. Timothy is just a name, and the fact he want to be reternd vampire, he needs a book, please don’t deprive us.
minica says
It is better to finish when it is natural for you than to stick to 9 book with mild plot and converted characters as in some other series. So thank you very much for all the wonderful time that I had and will have with your books.
I really love your books and your way of telling stories.
Minica
Tonya M says
Ok!! So this is my first encounter with a J. Frost book and it was Twice Tempted and then Once Burned…and then I re-read both! So…needless to say, I am quite looking forward to reading about Cat and Bones in more detail. If you match anything close to Leila and Vlad, I am totally sold…hooked…and looking for more. Stick to your plan and finish when the story is told. It is great!!
Thanks for such wonderful stories!
Carolyn Blatter says
I have loved the Night Huntress series from “Halfway to the Grave”. I have the eBooks and the audio which are fantastic.
I will be a little sad to see the series end, but I know “Up From the Grave” will be fantastic. As long as Cat & Bones pop in other books that would be great. Bones has to annoy Vlad.
I do hope you do an Ian book. I know, we will see Bones and Cat in that one.
I turned my daughter on to the books and she enjoys them also.
I will have to reread them, before the last book.
Thank you so much for letting us share this great series.
Lynne Phelps says
I am excited that all the major story lines for Cat & Bones will be revealed, but I hope you will continue to write within the Night Huntress World. .
For instance I really, really, really want to read a book with Veritas as the main character! She was getting so interesting! All the other books had a male vampire converting a human female. What about a story with a strong kick-ass female vampire like Veritas finding love, with another vampire or ghoul or with a human male? And we all have been wondering about Timothy since the first book. Those books would allow possible glimpses of Ian, who is so NOT ready to settle down but is oh so amusing!
They could be disconnected characters but within the same society, for instance it would be cool to read a series about a female master vampire as the head of a line. Ghouls also proved to be much more interesting than I had ever imagined!
And Vlad and Leila could continue having adventures or could develop their own spin off characters. Vlad is one of my favorites in the whole series!
Although Cat & Bones will be pretty well settled, and I agree with your ending the story arc now, you have built such an awesome world that I hope you will continue to take us there for other stories!
julie bailey says
Loved you books about Cat and Bones. I’m still reading them as I just discovered you as my new author. I love your series and look forward to reading more of your books. Good writing.
Thanks for the great reads and dreams.

Hello i’m an avid fan of night huntress or rather cat and bones series. First let me thank you for giving us a great book.
Everything that started always end, but i hope that as you end cat and bones you somehow give us another series as great as the grave series.
God blesses you more and more power.
Regina White says
This is absolutely my fave book series I have ever read. I’m really sad that it is coming to an end, but would like to thank you for wrapping it up properly and not just giving us a meaningless 9th book. I really appreciate it. Is there any chance at all this series can be turned into a movie or tv series? Because I would be incredibly happy if that was possible. Would there be a way to launch a kickstarter campaign or something for it to fund a tv series or movie?
Jeaniene says
Movies/tv shows are out of my hands. That’s up to Hollywood :).
Regina White says
I know. Well lets hope hollywood decides to pick it up. Thank you so much for writing this series and finishing it up for us how you thought was best. This is my fave book series ever and i’m really sad to see it go, but it couldn’t go on forever. lol. And thank you for letting cat and bones live on in us for the 7 books you gave us.
Dee Dee says
I have loved all the books. You have done a great job. I would love to read a book where Ian and Cats mom get together. Is there a book for Ian in the works?
Jeaniene says
It’s a “Maybe” on an Ian, book, although I have said in other places that Ian/Justina will not be a couple.
Dana says
If I missed a post about this, I’m sorry. Will there ever be a Tate book? I think this character has a story to tell, and he needs some love too!
Jeaniene says
No plans for a Tate book at this time. You will see him again in Up From The Grave, however.
Raine Stevens says
I have always been a mystery reader but last year, for some reason, I picked up the first of the Huntress series. It was one of the best things I have ever done. You are a fantastic writer and your books had me laughing and crying and after finishing the series and all the side books, I was hooked on a whole new genre. I am going to miss Cat and Bones, They sent me into a world I never thought I could enjoy. I went searching for the Ilona Andrews and the Patricia Briggs and Darynda Jones….The Faith Hunters…the list goes on and on and I cannot get enough, but my heart will always belong to Cat and Bones and I hope I get so see them in many of your future books, just to know they are doing ok….They are truly a love story! Thank you so very much.
Martina Koleva says
I would have been far more upset about this news if we didn’t have more Night Prince books to console us in the future( there still are going to be more Night Prince books, right? ). I’m sad because this is one of my favorites but if you think this is the right way to go, than we will have to accept it. Also, I’m afraid of what else you might put them through so I guess I’m okay with the story ending here.
Is Up from the Grave longer than the rest of the books?
Jeaniene says
Vlad and Leila will have a third book, yes. Up From The Grave isn’t longer than the other books. It’s right around the same size.
Cyndi says
Thank you for a great searies first. Second has there been any talk of a tv series of them? I would LOVE to see it filmed 😀
T Howard says
i hope to read about timothy in the future, i love the world you created so much that i devour your books when they come out.out of the many authors i read this world is by far the best imo. so please please consider a story for timothy! bones and spade and even ian to a certain extent have been represented but im dying to see you work your magic for timothy! thank you so much for the many hours of enjoyment you have given me over the years and as i said, i hope to read many more by you based in this wondeful fun world you have created!
Karen says
I love your books! I’ve reread the Cat/Bones series many times over! I’m sad that the next book will be the last but I’ve enjoyed your stories so much that I’ll just have to re-read them again! I’m curious if you’ll ever give us Bones’ version how he and Cat first met. I would love to know his take on how it all went down.
Jeaniene says
No plans to rewrite scenes/the other books from Bones’s pov at this time. Sorry!
Danae Louis says
Dear Ms. Frost,
You said ‘NO MORE CAT and BONES’.
I agree, even when my heart is still bleeding; Because I am hopelessly addicted to these characters.
I am sure I will die without VLAD ; and Ian just steal my little heart in HOME FOR THE HOLIDAY.
BUT I am sure I will be OK with anything as captivating as NH series NP series.
I trust you with my sanity.
kisses,
Danae

So if this will be the last Cat and Bones book and you only are going to have one more for Vlad will you still be writing more books? You really are my favorite author and and I would hate to see your writing and style end.
Jeaniene says
I will have at least one more vampire novel (in addition to the final Vlad and Leila novel) and I’m writing a new paranormal series now. Some info on it here: https://jeanienefrost.com/brokendestiny/

I have wondered for a few years if Jeaniene was sick of writing about Cat/Bones. I just got this vibe that she was just not into it anymore. I read a little of Vlads first but i I I didnt care too much for the female in tge story. Because I love Vlad so much I just couldn’t bring myself to read it. I was hoping Lila would end up to be his wife killed herself thinking he was dead. I am really glad I found the Night Huntress series. I am sad Jeaniene doesn’t want to write Cat/Bones anymore but every series has to end sometime, right? I just really don’t think it is the readers who are sick of Cat/Bones though…..a great series!
ArielKat says
Ian + Justina = Awesome book!

I just wanted to say that I am sad to hear that Cat and Bones will meet the end of their man character roles in your books. I LOVE the Night Huntress series oh so very much but, I am glad to know that you will be ending their story where you wanted it to end. That just means that we will get to experience Cat and Bones as we were meant to. If I start missing them, I can always grab my books and reread their adventures :). Hope I am able to see you when you come to Memphis,TN you are after all one of my favorite authors. Can’t wait to read more of your books!

Jeaniene Thank you for all the time you have put into making all of the Cat & Bones books so wonderful to read and reread. I love them and I am sad that they are done but knew it would be coming. I love all the books that you have written (that I have read so far). I am looking forward to reading any new books that you write. It would be awesome to learning more about Ian and Timothy and look forward to whatever you decide on whether or not to write a book about them. I have stayed up all night to finish reading your books and I am sure that I will continue to do the same with any book that publish. Thank you so much for giving us all the chance to read your books. I hope that you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

It breaks my heart that Cat and Bones are coming to an end but I want to thank you for all the enjoyment you have given me. I can’t wait for more from you!
Susan P says
I’m much more impressed with your integrity in writing the story YOU want to tell instead of adding fillers (which IMHO would betray your readers) to stretch out a series. We love your books b/c of your writing. Thanks for being true to yourself and your characters – which lets face it, is why we read your books in the first place. I’ll be sad to see them go, and am happy to have another Vlad and Leila book, but I’m also excited to see what you come up with next. If your next venture is as good as the previous ones, we are in for an absolute treat. Blessings on your Christmas!

First off, Cat & Bones were my series of the year. Then meeting you at the Southern Magic Readers Luncheon and me being a fellow writer, I see your decision in both lights. Yes, I’ll have to read mine over & over (when I miss them) but it shows me what I need to consider with my own novels. Thank you for your gifts, either way, because I treasure them.

I am obviously sad but I appreciate the brave decision. I will miss Cat and Bones very much but it had to end somewhere and I really respect the fact that you’re not using it as a cash cow milking money out of it unlike some authors nowadays. #Respect.

I’m very sad that the Cat and Bones series is going to end. It is by far my favorite paranormal romance series. No other author or series seems to compare and I always end up feeling eveything thing else in the genre is lack luster. That being said, I’m happy the series will not end pmlike the Sookie Stackhouse series which was out of steam far before it ended.
Dina says
A big hello from Montreal Canada!. Oh wow! I knew you had written before about ending the series, but Up from the Grave being the last book.
Thanks for stating all of your reasons. I’m looking forward to the new material. Any chance the adventures of Cat and Bones showing up on the big screen or the small screen? Oh the possibilities!!! Thanks so much…
Sherri Marshall says
There are several authors from which I highly anticipate new stories; JD Robb, Linda Howard, JR Ward and Jeaniene Frost. Now I’ve lost the excitement of waiting for a new Cat & Bones book. I hope you’re happy, because I’m ticked off!

This makes my day! It was an additional delight to meet the character through this very brief synopsis. Your series was my very first foray into the paranormal genre years ago. And I personally thank you for bringing us all into the world that only once existed in your noggin! A special thanks, though very sad, for you staying true and ending the story where you saw fit. I’ll always be a fan of your writing.
Becky says
I will miss cat & bones, but will look forward to what ever new stories you write that there will be a series are good as cat & bones were. To ever story there is always an ending and a beginning to a new one. What ideas will you have next? Can’t to find out! But I read and reread the cat & bones books, because they are really great stories. Cat & Bones have come a long ways from the time they first met till now. Loved the books! 🙂

I am sooo sad to hear that one of my favorite series will be ending! However, I have tremendous respect for an author who finishes a series instead of writing fillers. I had to give up two other series that I was reading because one in now on Book 22 and the other is on Book 20. They no longer make sense and i just skimmed through all the BS filler parts. It’s better to leave fans wanting more and fantasizing than thinking, “oh my god, why am I still reading this freaking series!” Thank you Jeaniene Frost for that!

Have been a big fan since your first book. WIll keep being a fan. Behind you on your decision to end on a good note. Have you considered creating a story on Cats mom? Somehow this character has intrigued me. She’s ballsy.
TRUE FAN!!!

I don’t understand it (Unless it turns out you kill them off)…but I respect your decision, after all they are born in your mind. AS long as they are alive there should be more to tell.
I hope you find out later on that there is more to tell about Cat & Bones. Once you start missing them too much 🙂 and starts to wonder what they are up too. This is my absolute favorite Vamp-series. I’ve missed C&B in the spin off, they were just passing by as props.
I hope I get to know more of your Vampires closer instead. But I will always have that little extra for these two.

I absolutely love your writing style; however, I am deeply disheartened there will be no more Bones and Cat in their own story. : (

I’ll certainly miss Cat & Bones, but as the old saying goes, ‘…All good things must come to an end…”
Still it’s going to be hard. Even though I’ve not really read all the stories, I do have them all from Audible and love them. Guess I’ll just have to re-hear all of them again, once ‘Up from the Grave’ comes out.
Good luck in all you do and don’t forget there are a lot of us out there who can’t wait for Ian’s story.
Wishing you a future of enjoyable writing.

Hi!
I cannot lie that I’m sad that Cat and Bones’s books will end soon, but I totally respect your decision and I’m so excited to read the final book this sunday!! Still, I will be crossing my fingers hoping to see them again through the eyes of other favorite couple such as Leila and Vlad!! It’s was totally epic and interesting to read how Leila see and describe Bones and Cat!
And please, I beg you… Never ever stop those magical fingers of yours!

I am very disappointed. I simply hate it when a favorite series comes to a conclusion and this series has been my favorite since I first discovered it.
Yona says
I’ve reread this series so many times I lost count and it will stay in my heart forever. I’m really sad to see it end, but yes it’s better this way than stretching it and making it something it’s not. But I won’t stop hoping for some short stories with them and their mention in other books. They are after all one of my favorites all time couples.
Esha Iyer says
Hey,
OMG!!!! I have religiously followed the night huntress series and i am in love with all the books. I also love all the characters though I am more biased about Ian, cuz hes perverted like me. (hee hee) Anyway, I’m glad you ended it here although I would like to read a short story with Cat, Bones and their bundle of joy. Thank you so much for providing me with an escape into your world which I have to say is quite adventurous. Makes me want to join them 😉

I love Cat and Bones and have thoroughly enjoyed their story. Thank you! Personally, I love when characters “pop up” in other story lines, so I’m looking forward to their cameos.

I just finished up from the grave, loved the way you ended the story for Cat & Bones! It felt complete, but I do hope to see them a little in future stories.
Just had to comment that I live about 10 minutes from the Rat Branch Pier on Watauga Lake, I screamed at my husband to cone and read that page, such a cool little surprise. I always loved that you used this area as a setting and as Cat and Bones ‘home’.
Look forward to reading whatever you’re working on next…

I am sorry to hear that this is the last book for Cat and Bones but totally understand. I hope you do include them in future books with all of their friends. Thank you so much for the hours of enjoyment i have had in listening to all of your books.

Like I said amazing story. Love your newest fan Helen Terry

Thank you so much Jeaniene for giving us Cat and Bones. So many times when a series is extended out this long, it gets repetitive. This series did not. I could not wait for the next book to come out. I hung on every word. I never actually “read” any of your books but listened to them all on audio. I absolutely love them all. I was SO FREAKING happy to read that although you will not continue to write just Cat and Bones’ story, they will be secondary characters in the books of the other characters. This made my heart swell almost to the point of bursting. You have so many characters that are just waiting to have their story told and I think this will be great. THANK YOU so much for sharing Cat and Bones with us. I cannot wait to find out more about how their lives have gone on with katie.
I looke forward to learning more about the other characters and hearing their stories.
Happy writing Jeaniene!! <3

I too am sad to see the series end. I want you to know that the reason I began reading this series was because of the novella. I wanted to read more about that world and I’m glad I did. I appreciate the fact you even gave an explanation for the end as it shows how much you respect your fans and yourself.

I totally LOVE CAT AND BONES. I am really said that it ended, but it was awesome. Loved the way you wrote the last book, it was unexpected. I love it so much that I bought the books in English and the books in Portuguese as I am from Brazil. Keep writing Vlad’s story..I love it too. And PLEASE write something about Cat, Bones and Katie. Thanks for the opportunit to read those awesome books.

I started your series through my favorite author Kim Harrison. I was waiting for the next Hollows installment and thought, if Kim likes it has to be good…she wasn’t wrong!
After the first I had to have them all…my husband did so for me this past Christmas!
I finally finished all, including the side stories and the novella just in time to pick up the final book.
I am reading it with sadness knowing it is the end but hopeful to see them as part of other stories!
Thank you for creating a great series!

Oh Lord,
I am late… I’ve been looking forward to getting this book, penned the release date, but I have a toddler and a 5 y.o…. I just noticed it was march 2nd:) what can I say?
Thank you for sharing Cat and Bones, they made me laugh, cry, mad, but I never was bored, never disappointed… I have loved books since I was old enough to put two letters together, and they have accompany me throughout my life. I can say that this series is without doubt one of the best I have read in all my life.
I understand your reasons to end the series and I applause it. I think it is far much better to know that I am reading a book you loved writing than reading a book you felt you had to write. If Cat and Bones are where they need to be, then I will savor this last book, and be grateful that I had the chance to read the entire series.
Miss Frost, thank you for sharing your talent with the world.

I’m actually really upset that this series is ending. I have been an die hard book reader all my life. About two a week. A while back my life took a pretty low turn and I just quit reading, well really quit everything. I was playing on my phone not to long back and downloaded my local library app. Your book was the first thing to pop up. Frist drop of Crimson. I was hooked. I looked you up found the whole series and started from the beginning. I had read all your books in less than a year. At that point the only one not out yet was Twice Tempted. I read some and listened to Tavia Gilbert and she really made the characters come alive. It was enough to pull me out and get me back not only into reading but into life. So thank you and I do understand your decision. I look forward to your new books. ( Oh and I didn’t just rent them, I did go buy them all) 🙂

I’m not going to bitch at you in this comment, don’t worry. I just wanted to ask if you could please, maybe occasionally just send out updates in their lives. I know i’m fucking crazy but I spent ages 12-18 reading their stories and yeah I know that was probably too young to start reading it but, whatever, those characters had an impact on me during these past years and i am way too sentimental for my own good (seriously, biggest hoarder ever). I’m not asking for regular short stories or anything maybe just an emailed newsletter once in a while for a couple of years saying stuff like “Katie had a date and Tate and Bones spent ages arguing about killing the date whilst Cat had to work out how to dress up without looking slutty and concealing weapons in a sundress” I’ll probably make up my own in my head to comfort my crazy ass self but it would be nice for some info from head of the original creator. I’ll understand if my stupid request isn’t granted and i’ll be surprised if this is even read let a lone considered, i’ll say cheers anyway along with a thanks and a bye. Cheers.Thanks.Bye

I have to tell you I’m with you I am so sad I love the characters and find myself in tears every time I think that they won’t be there anymore. I have a great imagination and I read 3-5 books per day and after a while you only remember those which have impacted you the most and Cat and Bones are those type of characters. I find myself wanting to continue their story. I hope they show up in future novels and we get an update of how they are doing.

I just want to thank you J.Frost. I know it may sound silly, but I always relied on your books. I started reading them when my life was literally in a tragic downfall, and the only thing that kept me happy and my spirits high was reading your books. They gave me hope. Despite it being about supernatural creatures, the love story, and the struggles all the characters go through and came out of gave me such a hope that I can be just as strong and live through my own problems and come out stronger than ever. Plus as a bonus when I was going through a really bad breakup the love story kept me upbeat. It gave me hope that it doesn’t matter why my relationship ended, it just means I haven’t found my “bones” yet and that at the end of the day I am this beautiful woman who can do anything. Now I’m babbling. I just want to say once again thank you so much J.Frost, not only for you giving me entertainment, and distraction for when I needed it most, but for opening my eyes, and giving me hope that my life will get better no matter the up’s and down’s.

I just finished reading Up From The Grave about fifteen minutes ago, and immediately jumped online for news of the next book’s arrival. …Tears are still streaming down my face as I write this message now…As an avid reader for the majority of my 41 years, I can honestly say that NO BOOKS have affected me the way the Night Huntress characters (especially Cat and Bones) have!! Having just discovered these wonderful creations of yours, I read all of them, including Once Burned, Twice Tempted, Eternal Kiss Of Darkness, and First Drop Of Crimson in about a month’s time! Mrs. Frost, you are an AMAZING storyteller. I am crying because I now feel an emptiness inside knowing that I have to say goodbye to characters that I have come to love. This has NEVER happened to me. …You truly brought Cat, Bones, and the gang to life. Their love is something I hope to have myself some day. Would love to see movies created from this series. God Bless You Jeaniene, and again, thank you.
#itssohardtosaygoodbye…
Jeaniene says
Thanks for the kind words, Konnie! If it helps, I’m not closing the door on the “world” of these books. There will still be more that feature side characters in the Night Huntress universe getting their own novels. Plus, Cat and Bones will probably show up as side characters in those books from time to time.

I started reading cat and bones at destined to an early grave and fell in love so I bought the other books and read like crazy. After I got done readibg each new book I was already wait fot the new book the next, but I knew it takes time to write books out. It is very saddening to know that cat and bones will be gone, I wish their will be another book about them with cats daughter Katie. Late last night I finished the book and read the epilogue to where they said their goodbyes. I dont want them to end or any other characters from the like Ian (will he ever find love?), spade or denise, or mencheres and kira or vlad and Leila? They are like a big family to me now and to see them go is heart breaking. One thing I wish to see your book turn into movies and see your lovin characters come to life 🙂
Brittany says
I just wanted to say thank you so much for writing your books. I am sad that Up From the Grave is the last Cat and Bones book but honestly i rather of it been the last then you used fillers like you said. I hope to see them in future books as side characters those like you did with the Night Prince series. Again thanks for writing the books and I cant wait tell the next one comes out.
D says
I have to admit that I was a little sad see this series come to an end. It is the only series that have I read over and over again. As I read this last novel, I couldn’t help but think a spinoff series about Katie wound be awesome. You can’t keep her hidden forever right? And Ian, we all want to see what kind of woman he would fall in love with. I can’t wait to see what kind of stories you cook up. Anyways, I know we’ll probably see bits of them in the other novels so It’s not completely depressing. Don’t ever stop writing. I love reading about these worlds you have created. It’s like a home away from home. Truly beautiful.
Shanette says
Words cant describe what Bones and Cat mean to me and their many adventures. I’m so incredibly sad that Up From The Grave will be the last book. I have read and bought all the books, audiobooks, and even the spin off’s (which in my opinion are just as great as the main books). As wonderful as it is for me to hold a book and make the characters come alive in my head its amazing to hear the characters come alive in the audiobooks! Tavia Gilbert was a great choice to read such a wonderful series. Please please please just, if you can, add little updates on their lives in any books you write in the future. Their story will be much more precious to me if I know they’re still at it. I personally would enjoy any filler stories you decided to make on them. As crazy as it sounds I will be looking for them. It feels like my friends are gone now that I know there wont be any more books. So sad. I have to say i just bought the last book and am reluctant to finish it for fear of the end.
I commend you for doing what you feel was in the best interest of your readers and I will continue to be a fan J. Frost. I’ll also continue to introduce any book lovers (such as myself) to the story of Cat and Bones. This series is truely a masterpiece, and has touched my life in more ways than one!!

Thanks for an enjoyable storyline. I was wondering if there would be any more books about Mencheres before Enternal Kiss of Darkness and after. I personally would love to hear more of his backstory and what happened after his book?

So glad you enjoyed Mencheres’s story. However, no plans at this time to write another novel centered around him. Sometimes, I just have to force myself not to start a new series :). Thanks!

Loved Mencheres & understand why there is no need for a sequel it would have been nice if the story ended with Mencheres & Kira’s wedding!
mel says
I loved the books , wish she would create one more about her child growing up 🙁
Chrissy says
Why weren’t Vlad & Leila included in the last scene of ‘Up from the Grave”???
Jeaniene says
The timeline ran concurrently with what was going on in Twice Tempted (which is why you see Vlad’s wedding from Cat’s point of view in Up From The Grave) so Vlad was too busy dealing with the climax of HIS book to bid Cat farewell at the end of hers.

Hi! I must be honest with you, im just as sad as you are but im really happy the day i found the first book in the supermarket (can you believe it?) I was almost done with my shop and i saw this book, read the plot and said “why not? Didnt heard of her or this book. Give it a try” and then it happened something amazing i fell in love of the book, characters and the narrative.
I finish the first one and i had to read the next one but they are all in english and my mother lenguage is spanish!! So i bought them in english and with the diccionary and google i read them one by one.
So now you know how much some of your fans love what you do.
Doesnt matter in which lenguage it is im always gonna love and treasure cat and bones.

I’m unconditionally falling in love with all of your Novel’s character (even though I love Mencheres and Vlad more :D)… I had read all of your novel less than 3 months (include hunting for your newest book). it’s sad to hear that we have to say goodbye to Bones and Cat.. They seems to be my “real friends”.. But I guess I understood your decision to end their story. U still can put them in another spin off novel. And I hope (like another people’s hopes) U will continue Mencheres’s story. Because when I re-read the Eternal Kiss of Darkness, I’m still thinking that their story aren’t end (yet).. Just like Vlad & Leila’s story.. 😀
But anyway, congratulations Jeaniene.. U are succeed to stole our heart with your novel.. 😀

Hi I just wanted to say I loved the Night Huntress series! I hate that Cat and Bones story has come to an end and I feel I’ve lost my friends. I would have loved to read more about their raising Kate (that book would also work great written from Tate’s point of view as he finds love while helping to raise Kate!!!). I really hope Kate gets her own series some day too. I did have one question, why didn’t Tate know that wasn’t Katie. I assumed she was switched after he left with her so why didn’t he know that was Denise and not Kate?
Jeaniene says
Thank you! To answer your question, Kate got separated from Tate and ran into Mencheres, Denise and Gorgon on her own. By the time they were all dragged in front of the Guardians, in the panic of the moment, Tate didn’t notice that Katie’s clothes were different. That’s the only indicator that a switch had been made since Denise would’ve transformed to look exactly like her.

That’s 4 years of falling in love with your books all over again and again and again and again and again. I cannot remember how many times I stayed up reading your books from night to dawn. I just read this post right now and IT CAME OFF AS A BIG FREAKING SHOCK. I just finished reading Up From the Grave a few weeks ago (school kept me very busy that I had no extra time to read novels) and I was kind of thinking already that the end for Cat and Bones is near when I read the last part but I didn’t know that it was the last book. It saddens me, truthfully speaking. Its like a silver knife being twisted in my heart (ha ha) to know that I won’t be reading another book about them. If I could be a vampire, I would fly to USA and green-eye you to write more books about them (seriously) but alas I am not. I’m going to miss Cat’s witty remarks :'( But all good things must come to an end and I’ll try to cope with the fact that the Night Huntress series is over. What I’m going to say instead is that THANK YOU SO MUCH JEANIENE FROST. I may be just another boring fan rambling on and on to you but I sincerely love your books, that’s the truth. You inspired me to use my imagination and write whatever I want, no matter how far-fetched they are. I had low points in my life that I don’t want o relive but the thought that if I give up on life at that time, I’ll never read another book of yours. This is getting really long so I’m just going to stop. Again, my deepest DEEEPEST gratitude to you JF for letting us become a part of Cat and Bone’s world.
P.S. Please write a spin-off about IAN after the last Vlad and Leila novel comes out. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. You can’t let that perverted bastard go off the hook without having him grovel for a woman’s love. PLEASE PLEASE. I think he deserves that much.

Hi,
I understood the end thing, this book was perfect to finish they story even if it let me with a little “I want more of this world”, and while everyone is asking about a possible Ian book or maybe even a Katie’s one I would like to know if you think there is more in Veritas character that maybe someday can turn on in a book or novella as you said already about Ian getting his one, because I get a feeling of her in the last one by the things she did and said to Cat.

I have been re-reading all the Night Huntress books for several years now because I enjoy the Cat and Bones story line so much! To me, it is the best story line in which all other stories are judged against in their genre. Have not, to date, read a series that captures the raw sensuality, action and comedy found in the Night Huntress books. They are phenomenal and I have never been one to review books or post comments to authors but I just wanted to tell you how fond I am of your series.
And also thank you for releasing the alternate plot to Destined for an Early Grave! I was thrilled to death to be able to read something new from the Cat and Bones story line. As a matter of fact I got up super early today, August 9th, to check your blog for the third installment. Since it wasn’t posted yet I thought I would read through you site and finally now to tell you how highly I thought of your Night Huntress novels and express my gratitude for the years of enjoyment they have brought me and will continue to bring as to me, they are truly timeless!

OK so I really hate that the cat and bones stories had to end but all good things must at some point but I have been very curious as to what about Ian will he ever find love like every one else did or just be a slut for the rest of his life? maybe one day that could be a book 🙂
But I believe the best thing ever beside the books of course would be for the series to be turned into a TV show to see it all played out would be amazing

I really can’t believe this series is coming to an end but although it’s sad i understand why you would end it. I just wish there could be a short story on cat, katie, and bones. Anyways thank you so much for including us in cat’s world. I can’t wait to read your new books! 🙂

First off I do so love Cat and Bones’s story line and I am sad it is ending. But I am glad you did address this cause I was wondering if there sorry was don’t. I do hope you continue putting the in a the occasional side characters. I love your writing, I started the Night Huntress Novels when I was working at Target and I saw the First book and got it on a whim, its a decision I have not regretted. You are an amazing writer!!!

Question. Whatever happened to Tim, I think that’s his name. The 4th friend in the group when Ian, Bones and Spade were changed to vampires by Ian.
Jeaniene says
Timothy is alive and he has a good reason for allowing his friends to think he isn’t. I haven’t told people what yet because I’m saving it for a subplot in a future book :).

I recently read a series that I absolutely loved…until the last 3 books. It was very apparent that the author had lost all interest in the books and the characters, and seemed to be just churning out books in order to make as much money as possible. While I certainly understand the desire to make money, I felt cheated.
So…as much as I would LOVE to see more about Cat and Bones, I really appreciate the fact that you respect your readers enough to say that the story is over. I have truly enjoyed the series – and I look forward to reading anything you write in the future!
