Last Friday night, I finished writing Up From The Grave, Night Huntress book seven. Usually typing “The End” brings me nothing but joy because it’s the literary equivalent of crossing the finish line in a marathon, but this time, my joy was tinged with a little sadness. Why?
Up From The Grave will be the last Cat and Bones novel.
Short reason why: I’m mostly an organic writer, as I detailed here, so several years ago when I plotted the skeletal outline for the series, I estimated that it would take a total of nine books to finish Cat and Bones’s story arc. Turns out, I finished it sooner.
For those of you who want the long reason, keep reading.
I started writing Cat and Bones’s story with no specific number of books in mind because I was unpublished and thus writing them only for me. The idea for one book turned into two, then two books turned into three, and then boom! In 2006, my dream came true by landing a publishing contract. At that time, my publisher only committed to two books, but I didn’t care. I had more stories to tell, so I kept writing them. Later, reader support meant my publisher kept buying them, but still, I didn’t have a specific number of books planned. I only had a story in my head that wasn’t finished yet.
Publishing is a business, so that sort of vagueness didn’t work :). Contracts required written outlines and readers very reasonably wanted to know how long of a series they were getting into. Back in early 2010, based on remaining plot points that I’d written down, I estimated that it would take a total of nine Cat and Bones books to tell their complete story. This is what I announced to readers.
Then, later in 2010, my publisher invited me to do an extended Cat and Bones novella for an anthology with Lynsay Sands. I’m a big fan of Sands, so I said yes. Once I’d finished writing Home For The Holidays, however, I realized because it was so long (nearly half a book!) and it contained a major series revelation, I would no longer need to write a ninth Cat and Bones book. The novella took care of that part of my story arc, and so when it came out in late 2011, I told readers that Cat and Bones’s story would now end at book eight.
Honestly, if I had to do it all over again, I would have written a different story instead of using a plot line from my overall series arc. Many of my readers skipped the anthology because, as they told me later, they preferred full-length novels to novellas. Because of that, I expect a lot of “Huh?!” responses to that plot-point recap in Up From The Grave. It was my mistake to include a significant reveal for the Night Huntress series in a novella, and I am sorry for that. If it’s any consolation, Home For The Holidays will be available this November as a single title for $1.99, so interested readers will soon be able to get it at a very low rate.
Let’s fast forward to 2013, when it was time to get back to Cat and Bones after spinning off two books in the Night Prince series. About halfway through writing Up From The Grave, I was stunned to realize that I was already done with all the plot points in book seven’s outline. At that moment, I had a decision to make: write “filler” plot to finish book seven without dipping into book eight’s story line, or continue on into the planned ending of the Night Huntress series.
I called my editor and told her that I was continuing on, which probably meant that Cat and Bones’s story was ending in Up From The Grave. She gave her blessing because, like me, she agreed that it was better to end their series early with the story I always wanted to tell, than to stretch it out into another book by writing insincere filler. Just to be sure that I did fit in everything, we agreed not to announce this to readers until I was done writing the book.
And here we are.
At this point, some of you may be thinking “Good, I never want to read a story that represents a halfhearted effort by the author.” Or some may be thinking “Good, I was getting sick of Cat and Bones anyway.” In case any of you are thinking “Wait a minute, you promised more Cat and Bones books, so you need to live up to your word!” please know that I’m trying to do best by you, and all my readers, by ending their story here.
It’s difficult emotionally for me to say goodbye to Cat and Bones. They’ve lived in my head for over a decade, and closing the chapter on them feels like bidding farewell to very old, very good friends. In addition to the emotional angle, there’s a financial one. Each new book in the Night Huntress series has a built-in fan base that nets me damn good money, and I like money. A lot. But not enough to milk my readers over a story I don’t believe in. As an author, I have no control over whether readers love my books, like them, feel ambivalent, or hate them, but I do have control over choosing to only write stories that I love. To me, that’s a far more important promise to keep.
I apologize for previously overestimating the total number of books in the Night Huntress series. It wasn’t my intention to mislead or disappoint readers. It was truly an honest mistake.
Does this mean you’ll never see Cat and Bones again after Up From The Grave? Well, not in a full novel with them as the main characters. They may show up as side characters in spin-off novels, as they did in First Drop of Crimson, Eternal Kiss of Darkness, Once Burned and Twice Tempted. I’m also not completely ruling out a future short story with them, but that’s a big maybe. It’s nothing I’m planning on at this time.
If you have other questions, feel free to ask them below. If you want to rant at me over my decision, you can, but it won’t change my mind. Also, emailing me story ideas won’t result in another Cat and Bones novel. This isn’t a case of writer’s block or me being out of ideas: I’m done with the story I set out to tell, which means Cat and Bones are at the place I always intended them to be. Any sadness I feel over that is overshadowed by my happiness at getting to take them there.
I hope readers enjoy the final leg of their journey, but whether you continue on to the end or you got off years ago, let me give a huge, heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined Cat and Bones along the way. I know for me, it’s been an amazing ride, and I thank God for giving me the opportunity to share it with you :).

I have enjoyed each of the Cat and Bones books and the spinoffs featuring Mencheres, Spade, and Vlad. Their personalities, strengths, and very human flaws endear them to me, and I have delighted in their growth and maturation. They were richly entertaining in their youthful adventures and warmly rewarding in their deeper relationships and struggles as their older selves. Thank you for these books and these characters. Please imagine and bring to life more like them!

I agree with you completely! I do hope JF writes a book about Katie, and keep her parents C&B, as main characters as well in her life. I feel that would be expected. There is one thing I kind of don’t understand though, and I am hoping JF will find time to answer. As I know, an author matured, and expectantly her books and writings tend to improve, but what is difficult for me, looking back on the C&B books are all of their difficulties. “Crimson Blood,” “Eternal Kiss of Darkness,” and all of “The Dark Prince” books and novels, seemed to be filled with more passion than that of the feelings Cat and Bones displayed toward one another. I feel like they deserve a book that focuses as much on their relationship, and the passionate love they have built their together over time that, all of the other characters were given in their books. The other books left me feeling like C&B didn’t get the due diligence to their true love for one another that the others were given. No sooner than they truly found each other completely, the series was over, and that was incredibly disappointing for me. One more Cat and Bones book, showing just how deeply connected they are in the future, that would be a nice complement to them, as I feel a little ripped off, as all they did was fight everyone’s wars with them, along with a lot of political interference, not to mention the many ups and downs. I feel like it’s their turn to have a book that ends their story, that shows all of the passion and love, (arguments expected, otherwise it wouldn’t be them,) but more just to show just how truly and completely in love they are, and I mean this for Bones especially. Book 7.5 when the, in “Outtakes From the Grave,” when Bones cheated on Cat… SO GLAD THAT WAS AMMENDED! Otherwise, I don’t think I could have been a fan of the books. I just feel like it’s there turn now. Let something happen to Cat, where Bones goes half crazy… I feel like it’s their turn to have all of the crazed love, some fear on Bones part, as Cat always seemed to save the day all of time, and the passion, that was given attention to the other books, that I never felt like they received or deserved to have, as soon something was always good no wrong. It never felt right to me that Cat felt like a freak. I feel like Vlad comforted her more in that aspect than her “husband” did… which brings me to this… How come when Bones fought Gregor, were they not made to rebound themselves as husband and wife. I feel like the books should be gone back over, and some major blacks filled in. Lastly, the only book I did not care for, where all of this could have been done was, when they were fighting that stupid ghost. I don’t know.. very disappointing, but hopefully will get some answers.

Christine, I will be thinking about your comment as I re-listen to the books to see if I notice the same thing. I heard about Ian’s book coming out later and thought “why not re-read them all to prepare” and that is what I’m doing. I’m almost done with the first book and I think there are some heavy feelings there…From my first run through of the Night Huntress World books, if memory serves, I didn’t have near the same feelings as you describe. But I read your comment and it’s too late to unsee it—the paste has come out the tube! Anywho, not having re-read them yet, I wonder if what you’re describing feels that way because the single books and shorter series have that sped up conflict/resolution thing going on whereas c/b is stretched out. And/Or their personalities may not warrant such behavior. Again, if I’m not misremembering, they’re more shenanigan than telenovela, at least to me anyway. Or to geek a little, I get the vegeta/bulma vibe (everyone knows veg/bul are in lurv with each other. It’s apparent in Super especially!) Your comment is too hard but I love it and it’s going to sit in my head now during this second run. Bottom line, I love these books!! Thank you Frost for the gift of Cat and Bones! I do audible during my commutes each day. I don’t own a truck so I love to do it in a car…
Danielle says
I re-listened to the entire series (and some filler books while I still had time to wait for Ian’s book). I love them all! I finished Ian’s book this week and it is simply excellent.
I will read anything Frost puts out. I accept whatever reality she has revealed for each character thus far and trust whatever more she may share with us in the future. I never want it to end!
And since I mostly do audiobook options, I must also mention that Tavia Gilbert is the best.
More books please!
Jeaniene says
Thank you, and I love having Tavia as my narrator!

I have been a reader since the first book and all the way to the last, I cant ever put one of your books down! So happy you found a great way to end it! I cannot wait for more amazing reads!
You are an awesome author, and I would definitely come to a signing if you ever came to Nova Scotia Canada 🙂
Good Luck in your future Books, and keep us posted as usual. Its refreshing to see an author take interest in there fans!

Thank you!

I second you, Renee. We love your books, Jeaniene. Keep writing and I’ll keep reading. 🙂

Oh my god JF I love your books even though I’ve only read 4 of them n they are out of order😂 I’m trying to find a store where I can buy the Night Huntress Novels. I’m so glad you wrote all the books you have made and I’m excited for more. Honestly I love everything and wouldn’t change any of it because that’s the way the story is supposed to go!

thank u for writing cat and bones story. i love reading vampire books and have read a lot, but this is the best series i have ever read. i was emotionally upset when i started reading first book, and i completed the whole series in 2 days,. cat helped me a lot.. i’m really sad that the series ending.. im a hardcore fan of your books., thanks again for the best series ever
Lindsey says
As sad as I am to see Cas and Bones go, I’m glad that you are ending it the way you want. I may not be an author, but I am a musician and I know how hard it can be to write something when you’ve completed everything you wanted for it.
On the story itself I think it’s fantastic. I’ve been into vampire books for as long as I can remember and Cat and Bones have been a great addition to my little collection of vampire characters. I also really like your interpretation of all the vampire lore. It makes them sexy and dangerous without pushing it. I can not tell you how many vampire books I’ve read where you just give up because the vampire lore is so bad, or it’s all romance and no action because the vampire is so angsty. Add in a lovable cast and a relatable main character and you’ve got me hooked.
I cant wait to catch up on all the spin offs and look forward to reading anything else that you come up with.

The release of Vlad’s third book hit my throwback memories of Cat and Bones. Up until now I have the book but refused to read it because I don’t want it to end (I know, I know… I’m a hopeless case… XD). But I’m grateful that I stumbled upon your books (Yeah.. I read them all.) But I will read it now, because I have to let them go sooner or later. As a parting gift of some sort, I hope it’s ok that I will be studying the series in the Feminist, Marxist and Metaphoric light for my Degree in Literature? I want them etched in my professors mind until the end of their lives. mehehe…
Many many thanks for such wonderful roller coaster ride with Cat and Bones. <3

Hi! 🙂
I could online read yet your book Up From The Grave but german transletion, they transletet four of your books in Hungary, that’s the bitter case. I was reading it in german speach, because mine english isn’t that good, but when I have to I am reading in original speach ( as: Alternate “middle” version of Destined For An Early Grave). I loved your books, and I alwayes will love them, but it would be great to read one more book how they are reasing Katie up. I think it would be the greatest ending. Becuese would Cat and Bones “Love life” suffer or be the same having a chield? 😀 Or Bones wouldn’t bother him self, I thing he wouldn’t. But it would be funny to read it. And how they relaionsship develops, and I think hear an Justina. 😀 I don’t want to be fierce, I am only sad that I can’t read new Cat and Bones story. I thank you that you write such good books, and I am waiting for the Night Prince novel. I love Vlad to. I am waiting that they translatet it to german, but when they don’t surely transletet it. I will read your book in english. Im a big fan! And it was good to read that Cat is a Kitten in Bones eye but a realy tought Kitten, and because of mine name it was good to read.
I hope I didn’t disturbe you, and I didn’t make big mistakes in text, it could be easier to write in Hungary, but I need to practice english. 🙂 Once more thank you for the great stories. Love them.
Have a nice day. 🙂

Hi, Germany will release Up From The Grave in German, but I don’t know the date yet. As for a future story about Katie, I have ideas, but no concrete plans yet. Thanks for your note. Glad you’re enjoying the books!
Kitti says
Thank you for you answer, I am happy to read that you have ideas about Katie ^^
Kitti says
I have one more question. What is Marie going do with the Ghost of Kramer? You will write it in one of you books, or it’s going to be a seret? 🙂
Swetha says
Mrs. Frost,
I am an avid reader and I go bonkers when I don’t have a good book to read. Yes, I am under-aged and I am not supposed to read your books. But the plot and the characters are so good that I read all the books without the knowledge of my parents (they are strict).Though I would really love to see Cat and Bones again, I think that the present ending is more appropriate. When they are supposed to go hidden, its not fair to bring them up again.
I also want to thank you for all that The Night Huntress Universe has taught me till-date. It has helped to shaped me into what I am today – a stronger and a morally upright person than the coward that I was before.I also want you to know that I am a fan of your writing style, not just the plot.I would be really happy if I get a chance to meet you, but since I am not in USA, I don’t think its possible.Keep up your good work.
Love You
Dusk says
I first want to say that I love your books and very much enjoy them every time I read or listen to them. I do understand endings to books but I must say I am sad. Mostly because I really had hoped to hear more about Katie. She is so interesting to me. I guess my last question would be if we would get to see her more in the future of your writing or if her story ends here?
Always a supporter and fan

Jeaniene says
I would like to do a novel around Katie one day, when she is grown. But first, more Vlad & Leila, plus more Ivy and Adrian, then Ian gets his own book(s).
Alisha says
Yay!!!! I love Ian and this is the first time I’ve seen you respond super-confidently (I hope) that he will be getting at least one book! You have made my day, and probably my week, with this reply. On a random side note, personally I’m hoping he winds up with Veritas as they would be an amazing couple; plus I really like her character & would love to hear more of her backstory, too!
You are an amazing author & I’m a huge fan of your work. Seeing what HBO did with Christine Harris’ Southern Vampire Series or Outlander on Starz makes me pray for a TV deal for you….let us know if there’s someone in particular we should be harassing about this, as I just send in random–but repeated!–requests to the website, FB page, etc. of the cable companies & now Netflix & Amazon:)
Thanks so much for sharing your incredible stories & superlative talent with all of us! Much love, prayer & positive energy to you:)
Kirstin Knight says
I really hope you do find a story for Katie later on down the road!! I loved the last book but it left me wanting more of Katie. I feel silly for wondering just how she grows up and what she’ll become and the hopes I have for her. I know as a small writer myself it is really hard to write a book you have no interest in or have lost interest in but I hope that you’re love for these characters never fade because I know mine won’t!
Sofi says
Hello!
I am an ardent fan of the history of Cat and Bones. Itself from Russia, and I can not fully write in English, but I want to express a big thank you for giving me the pleasure!
The very young writer, and your novels give inspiration to my personal creativity.
Thank you and good luck!
Jennifer Frazer says
But what about Caty.I need to know how she grew up! !Ughh, what am I gonna do now! Lol, seriously this is horrible, I love this series!
Chad says
I’ve always wanted to write you but honestly was never quite sure where to start.
Iman says
Jeaniene Frost:
First, can we talk about how your books would do AMAZING as films? Waaayyy better than other books-turned-movies. I mean, who doesn’t like a vampire-assassin-turned-crime-fighter? Answer: No one. Everyone wants to see these in film, even if they don’t know it yet. I almost want to start a petition and see if it takes off like the whole Death Star situation a few years ago.
Second, I wanted so badly to look up and read the Ian book(s?) and when I found out they didn’t exist yet, my first thought was, “Maybe I can get Mencheres to read her mind for me and tell me the plot. I mean, she’s human, so it should work.” And then I was like, “Oh wait…”
All this to say, I’m glad you exist, basically. Thank you for existing. 😉
Also Vlad. Yum.
Brittany says
Any chance of a book from Katie’s perspective? We’ve only just met her and I’d love to read more! Also I’m from New Zealand so I’m crossing my fingers Cat and Bones decide to come here 🙂
Jeaniene says
I would love to write a book centered around Katie when she is older. She has so much uniqueness, and the idea of showing Cat and Bones as nervous parents cracks me up ;).
Taymee says
Dolly Parton once said the secret to successfully entertaining it’s to step on the stage and make the people jump for joy and to walk off while they’re still screaming. I love bones and cat. I’ve read some series where by the author kept going long past the point the characters stopped growing. Leave them while we still love them
Desrae says
Hi, I love your books. A few weeks ago I started night prince and finished book 3. I had no idea the night huntress came before until two weeks ago. I just finished book 4 tonight. I am so Excited that the story continues. I have one question- will there be a book for Tate? I hope so, i don’t want him to be inlove with Cat forever. Thank You for sharing you amazing stories with us. 😀
Jeaniene says
Glad you’re enjoying the books! Please do check out my “author recommended reader order” section here for the Night Huntress and spinoff books: https://jeanienefrost.com/reading-order/
I have no plans to write a book on Tate at this time, but he does evolve, and things change with him and Cat.
Angela says
I for one would love to see a story about Tate moving on from Cat – preferably with a human/kickas/angel who gives the bad Vampires a run for their money. 5″7″ with fair skin/hair and ethereal; being competent with a powerful bow/arrow with magical properties. Bones has asked for her people to assist to help stop an uprising between factions, Cat not sure what to make of her as when she meets with Cat/Bones discovers she has history (though not romantically) with Bones; Cat realizes that she finds it hard to let go of Tate due to her possessive friend streak but overtime she realizes she has to let Tate go as he even though he doesn’t realize it at first he has in love with Angel and she with him. Angel only knew of Tate due to his interest in Cat and wasn’t interested at first although she was attracted to him, but his attachment to Cat put him off. Various battles and situations later meant they had to put trust in each other which ultimate leads to some amazing hanky panky. Love the Tate character – but he’s just too damn good and loyally wasted on Cat:-)
Jessica says
Thank you for them. I love to get lost in another world and you have done that in all your books. I sometimes have to reorganize my brain back to reality after reading. Thank you for that.
Paula says
Hi ! I’ve read every single Cat & Bones book and loved them! I keep coming back to them every now and then. What you did with them and the other characters is amazing. I’ve read a lot of books with a lot of lovable characters but these are truly among my favourites. I don’t have many and believe me, I read a lot! It’s so sad that their story is over, I’m really going to miss them. But I’m one of those who think is way better you finish now and not dragging it endlessly so you finish getting tired of these wonderful characters.
However, I’m desperately looking forward to stories about Ian, Tate, Juan,Dave, Cooper and what-the-heck-happened-to Timothy. Am I asking too much? Sorry, I’m just too hooked up!
I hope you can come to Argentina one day.
Thank you for everything!
Destiny says
Will u be making a series about the daughter and if the have more kids
Ayanda says
I am really bleak about Cat and Bones not having any books but I really do love the way their story ended. I was wondering if you planned to write more about Tenoch, Timothy and the Cain legacy because it would make a really cool prequel. Also, did Tenoch really die?Or is he still alive and hiding out somewhere?! What other powers did he have? Is Cain his Sire?! These are the questions that keep me up at night!!
Jeaniene says
I don’t have plans to write a prequel at this time, but I *do* have plans to go further into Cain’s legacy and why Timothy disappeared (and what he found) after searching for him :).

Just wanted to say I’ve enjoyed the Night Huntress series quite a lot. I read them as ebooks and am now listening to them as audiobooks. The narrator did a fantastic job performing them. She really conveys the humor well, nails the erotic scenes really, really well, and does a fantastic job with the accents. The audio versions let me enjoy the series all over again. Can’t recommend them highly enough.
Whatever you write in the future, I’ll be happy to go along for the ride. Love the way you stick to your characters so close throughout the stories.

I just read about your decision to finish Cat and Bones story at book 7 and think you did a lovely job. Thank you for the gift of telling their story in 7 books, as I like to re-read them. I love to re-read books as they are like movies for me in my mind and this is what I keep telling my kids who I see re-watch movies and tv shows all the time. I love urban fantasy books, but for some reason, Irving Stone’s book- The Agony and the Ecstasy biography of Michelangelo is calling my name in between homeschooling. Take Care!
Daphne Pieterson says
Wow, I just found out about 7 being the LAST Cat & Bones story…. I went like…. WTF?! I am so very interested what happens to Katie. I would like to see a flash forward…. like when she’s an adult and she turns out to be this awesome powerhouse to equal the Guardians and she being able to turn them into a more ‘fair’ institution. Or something like that….
For now, it kinda feels like JK Rowling saying book 7 was the last of the Harry Potter Universe. And we went like, come ON! You can prequel with James, Sirius and Lupin or sequal with the Potter/Weasly/Granger kids. Completely new story arc but same beloved characters. I GET IT that a story arc is complete but still… there can always be another with te same characters!!
Same as TwiLight by the way. I mean… wouldn’t it be awesome if Carlisle and his family would overtrow Aro without willing it?! It would just HAPPEN because there was no other choice…. would make an awesome stiry arc as well…
Anyway…. I’M NOT DONE with Cat & Bones… and I would hate it if they just popped up here and there or would get a side story…. I really think there could be an awesome story arc in about 20 years. With ALL of our beloved characters. Also Spade, Denise, Vlad, Leila…. I mean, Vlad already offered Katie honorary line membership so he HAS tot get involved if things turn out nasty…. I would eat this up!!!
Well…. sincerely hope I made you rub your chin….
Love,
Daphne

Hi,
I just wanted to say thank you for these stories. I absolutely love Cat & Bones, I think it is the best series I’ve ever read (and I read a lot of books^^)!! I’m sad that their story is finished and would love more Cat & Bones action, but I’m greateful for the spinn offs and hope they will continue endlessly… Since I’m from France I had a hard time finding your published books (they take longer bc of translation) but now that I found your website I got into the ebook world and was fortunate to find a lot of side stories and anthologies.
So all that to say, you have fans all over the world who admire you & your work. Thank you so much and please never EVER stop! Oh yes, and thanks fr setting relationship goals 😉
Regards,

Thank you so much for the night huntress series. I just finished “Up from the grave”, and even though it is with a bit of sadness in my heart that this may have been the last time where i could follow Cat and Bones on their breathtaking journey, and the emotional roller coaster between them, i am truly happy you gave me the opportunity to be a part of their life.
Thank you so much Jeaniene, you are an amazing writer.

Omg I have loved reading about cat and bones but do not understand why you’re ending them …right now I am in the middle of ” Up from the Grave ” and if Bones really died in this book I will be sooooo angry …………this was the first series of yours that I have read and enjoyed them immensely………what will I read a without them ?!?!? Very upset for sure !!!
Jeaniene says
It’s no spoiler to say that Bones doesn’t die. I have long promised my readers that if they stick with me through a series, they WILL get a happily-ever-after for the main couple. Up From The Grave is the last Night Huntress book, BUT, Bones and Cat show up as side character in the Night Prince series and the Night Huntress World novels. And, there is a novel-length anthology called Outtakes From The Grave that features deleted scenes and alternate versions from Cat and Bones’s series, so you get to see them again there, too. Thanks!

Is there any chance that you might do another book on Mencheres? He is my favorite character of yours by far. I know that his story was told in Eternal Kiss of Darkness but I want more. There is so much you could add on to their story. I would love to know more about the vampires that govern all the vamps. And since Kira was supposed to be joining them it would be awesome to learn what that entails and just more about them. As well as how in may effect the lives of Mencheres and Kira. And there is the fact that Mencheres is so powerful and rules over so many other vampire that would be nice to have explored. I really love your books and always look forward to more. I’m just finishing Beautiful Ashes now.

Just wanted to say that you are my absolute FAVORITE writer! I adored all of the Cat & Bones books and have read each one many many times. I have also passed them along to other people who are now also big fans of yours. Thank you for all of the spin off books too! Love when Cat & Bones pop in, but even when they don’t the stories are AMAZING! Please don’t ever stop writing. I very much look forward to when another one comes out. I mark the date in my calendar so I can immediately emerse myself into one of the intricate worlds you create. 🙂

Ever since the first book of yours that I read, I fell in love. I’ve read the entire series (adding each new book as its published) at least 5 times. I haven’t kept track but it’s enough to make my significant other tease me for rereading them so often.
Over the last year and into this next one, some of my biggest life changes have come into play. Well that may seem odd to talk about, I say it because one of the biggest players in keeping a cool head and making it through each event was your stories. When things are becoming more than I can handle in my real life, it’s a breath of fresh air to delve into your series. After my break, reading through your series again, I can face life with more focus. So thank you. You’re an outstanding writer.
I anxiously await your Night Rebel series!

Thanks so much for the kind words!

Jeaniene, I’ve listened all published audiobooks you have regarding the Night Hunters, they are awesome! Now, I’m re-listening them in order 🙂
My only question is about Happily Never After novella – where are Chance and Isabella in the context with the main plot? Are you talking about them in the future? I’ve not heard from them in either Night Hunters or Prince…. just wondering 🤔
Jeaniene says
Sorry for the delay replying! Happily Never After takes place after Halfway to the Grave and before One Foot in the Grave.
Woderinglady82 says
Ok this might have been asked at some point and I didn’t see ….. but have you ever planned or even thought about writing the first book from Nighthuntress in Bones POV ???? I always wondered why everything was going on what was in his head .
Wonderinglasy82 says
This Series is one of my most favorite . If someone asks me what to read it’s always the first I recomend !

Thank you!

I’ve thought of this, but with my deadlines, I don’t have time. Sorry!

As always with the end of a phenomenal series, I feel bereft. I will dearly dearly miss my friends (my husband thinks I’m crazy), but the characters are so grounded in reality (ha) and humorous that I’ve laughed out loud more and more with each book and snarky comment.
I beg you to continue to open the door to each character so that I can enjoy their company once more.
So glad God blessed you with your gift and me through you 😉

I agree with you completely! I do hope JF writes a book about Katie, and keep her parents C&B, as main characters as well in her life. I feel that would be expected. There is one thing I kind of don’t understand though, and I am hoping JF will find time to answer. As I know, an author matures, and expectantly her books and writings tend to improve, but what is difficult for me, looking back on the C&B books are all of their difficulties. “Crimson Blood,” “Eternal Kiss of Darkness,” and all of “The Dark Prince” books and novels, seemed to be filled with more passion than that of the feelings Cat and Bones displayed toward one another. I feel like they deserve a book that focuses as much on their relationship, and the passionate love they have built their together over time that, all of the other characters were given in their books, which focused mainly and completely just on them, with cameos of the other characters. It didn’t seem right to me. The other books left me feeling like C&B didn’t get the due diligence to their true love for one another that the others were given. No sooner than they truly found each other completely, the series was over, and that was incredibly disappointing for me. One more Cat and Bones book, showing just how deeply connected they are in the future, that would be a nice complement to them, as I feel a little ripped off, as all they did was fight everyone’s wars with them, Cat constantly being blamed, and taking it… where was Bones exactly to stand up for her, (except on maybe two occasions, if I remember correctly because he was to busy being pissed of and hating Tate,) along with a lot of political interference, not to mention their many ups and downs.I like strong women characters, really not fond of doormats. He put her in a trash dump for God’s sake!!! I feel like it’s their turn to have a book that ends their story, that shows all of the passion and love, (arguments expected, otherwise it wouldn’t be them,) but more just to show just how truly and completely in love they are, and I mean this for Bones especially. I don’t feel like his possessiveness towards Cat was as deep as hers. Maybe, a Bones POV book. I felt like he slighted her a lot. Especially, when it came to her transformation that, he swore he did not care about, and would never pressure her into. Also, is Cat the most powerful Vampire created with her extodinary ability(ies). That would be a great book to focus on, as it gives others to want to seek her out, Bones would suffer a little, and have to save the day for once. Let him feel the possibility of her death, as she had to feel for him, then to not tell him about it. Yeah, that wasn’t cool. . Book 7.5 when the, in “Outtakes From the Grave,” when Bones cheated on Cat… SO GLAD THAT WAS AMMENDED! Otherwise, I don’t think I could have been a fan of the books. I just feel like it’s their turn now. Let something happen to Cat, where Bones goes half crazy… I feel like it’s their turn to have all of the crazed love, some fear on Bones part, as Cat always seemed to save the day all of time, and the passion, that was given attention to the other books, that I never felt like they received or deserved to have as soon, something was always going wrong, and they (mostly Cat) was left to clean it up. It never felt right to me that Cat felt like a freak. I feel like Vlad comforted her more in that aspect than her “husband” did… which brings me to this… How come when Bones fought Gregor, were they not made to rebind themselves as husband and wife. I feel like the books should be gone back over, and some major blanks filled in. Lastly, the only book I did not care for, where all of this could have been done was, when they were fighting that stupid ghost. I don’t know.. very disappointing, but hopefully will get some answers. HopefullyJF really reconsiders writing one maybe two more books, (one really long one would be fine,) to fill in the holes, and show people that Cat and Bones are the glue that brought everything and everyone together (in my opinion.) No one was interested in a life mate until them. Now they are gone, and don’t seemed to be missed. Don’t like the cameos. Feel like they are more deserving. More so, way more deserving of a proper conclusion.
Sorry, as I’m a huge fan, but I do have my hang ups that I would like explained, or written into a proper conclusion of a book…
Christine says
One more thing… and I’ll try to let this go… Vlad and Layla spent the night in C&B’s room. I remember her mentioning in a novella that, the room had been soundproofed… did you forget (whoops)
Would like to catch up to find out how strong Bones has become, due to his gift of strength, as well as Cat, due to her unique abilities that all vampires would kill to have, and I will say that Vlad dumping all of his friends.. that was a little much. Especially when it was thought to believe Cat was incredibly special to him. Not in love, although at times, it seemed like he loved her more than Bones did, but still… that was just dumped off of the table. I don’t know, is there more to C&B’s love. As much as the others that were written about, or was it to much for them to love each other that deeply. It wasn’t for Cat, but Bones, yeah I do question that. Help me out here.
Christina says
I think the soundproofed room was in one of menchere’s safehouses/castles, because right after they though bones had been killed, everyone on their lines went on high alert and in hiding. I’ve got to check my facts for specifics, but I’m pretty sure that they are in a different house than the “sound proofed but not telechenetic proofed” bedroom. Cheers!

I listen to audiobooks, and I’m trying to figure why the hell Bones voice is so high. He sounds like a pre adolescent girl at times. All of the other men have strong voices, then Bones walks in, and I feel like he should be at the children’s table. The only time hi voice is deeper are in the sex scenes, and even those seem lacking to me compared to the other books, and how JF wrote those scenes out.

Im busy reading Cat and Bones book 6, and dreading (and looking forward to) their final but. But I have to ask – will Tate ever get a book? I adore him, and never saw him in the negative light he was portrayed in.
Jeaniene says
Hi Tricis, the end of Up From The Grave shows where Tate’s priorities will be for a while. If he gets a book, it wouldn’t be until much later. I’ve always liked his character, too. While I have no plans to write about him in the near future (I’m writing Ian’s books now) I wouldn’t rule it out forever :).
Danielle says
I’m honestly in love with Tate. ( Don’t tell my husband lol ) So I really hope he gets his happy ending. I know where is focus is right now but he deserves and needs more in his after life.
Love you all your books. You are an amazing author!!
Thank you for the hours of enjoyment

All I know is that I kind of hope the Night Huntress Universe ends on Cat and Bones. After the Night Prince and Night Rebel series are both definitely done, I want one last Cat and Bones novella – because I always love to end series with the same characters I first fell for.

I haven’t yet finished the Night Huntress series, but I’m gearing up for the end. Finishing a series is always a little sad for me. But I’m pleased to know this series and all your other ones have definite endings. I don’t like series that go on for so long that it starts feeling repetitive. I’m not an author, but I have written fanfiction, and I agree that stories need to feel important to the person writing them. So while it’s sad to see Cat and Bones ending their journey with us, I’d rather have the ending that was meant rather than a filler that just adds bulk.
P.S. I ran across Night Huntress because I was hunting for vampire stories that I could actually enjoy. I like animal shifters and was trying to branch out. I love your vampires and how your couples have things in common in their histories that make them coherent. As I said on Twitter, I’d love to see more of Mencheres and Kira sometime, if inspiration hits for another story. Would love to see those two working together. Maybe see Kira as an Enforcer.
