The idea behind Devil To Pay originally came from a dream. Yes, I get lots of ideas – good and bad – from dreams (if only I could call sleeping “research!”). In the dream, I was humming the lyrics to Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb, of all things. The song starts with, “Hello…is there anybody in there?” In my dream, as soon as I said those words, from inside me I heard what I knew was a demon’s voice reply with, “I am.” Scared me immediately awake! Demonic possession isn’t a new concept, of course, but the idea of being possessed and yet still in control of yourself part of the time stayed with me. So, months later when my editor asked me if I was interested in writing a “devil” type of story, I thought back to this dream and said yes. My hero, Blake, is possessed, yet he has periods where he is in control. He thinks the only way to stop the demon is to kill himself, but when he attempts to throw himself in front of a train, vampire Elise saves him. Elise is fighting her own internal battle, and in her attempts to find another way to rid Blake of the demon without killing him, the two are drawn to each other.
Familiar characters such as Mencheres, Bones, and Cat also show up in Devil To Pay. For regular Night Huntress readers, the events in this story take place between At Grave’s End and Destined for an Early Grave, but it is a stand-alone so you don’t need to read those first to understand it. I really loved writing Devil To Pay and if you’re inclined to check it out, I hope you enjoy reading it!
Now, back to writing Once Burned. Leila is starting to realize that Vlad might be the scariest man she’s ever met, but she still wants to play with fire (har har! ;)).
I loved the story in Devil to Pay. It was a different view into your Night Huntress world that just gives the characters richness. Blake and Elise are terrific in the lead roles too. I would totally recommend this novella. I have it in print, but I might just have to feed it to my kindle too!

I love this novella. It was fantastic to see Cat, Bones and Mencheres from a different perspective.
I pre-ordered it a while ago so it should arrive at midnight :).
I enjoyed Devil to Pay as part of the Four Duke’s anthology. I really looking forward to Once Burned. Throwing teasers like that around just make the wait even harder.
I have this novella on pre-order as well. Can’t get enough of Mencheres. I like that Elise has affection for him as her Master.

No love for european kindle users?
The 5$ I have to pay for the shortstory is abit of a joke if I can buy Four Dukes and a Devil anthology for 7$.
I hate amazon, but I still will buy it.. but the anthology, 4 more storys for only 2$ more.
Lya, Amazon is the one without the love for European kindle users – they’re setting the international price at higher than the publisher is requesting. I wish they’d lower the price to the $1.99 that it is selling for in the US, but I have no control over this, and neither does my publisher. Very sorry!
I have a Q ok so i wanted to read devil topay but i cannot find it in paperback or hardcovr form. I come only find it in kindle form and it will not download to my nook. Someone please help?

Devil To Pay by itseld is only available in digital form. If you want it in paperback, you’d have to buy the Four Dukes and a Devil anthology. It’s probably not in stores anymore, but online retailers should have it.
