I promised to post snippets from THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE soon, and I will. But not yet. I have to do a skimming re-read of the book to find some good ones that aren’t too spoilerish and I’ve been busy this week getting things together for my accountant (taxes, grr!) and working on the book trailer for THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE. I started doing book trailers after seeing some really cool ones on other books and thinking, hmm, that looks fun. Ahem. If I only knew.
DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE was the first of my books that got the trailer treatment, and what I found out during the process was that my husband has been right all along: I am a control freak, lol. I ended up picking most of the pictures, changing the music, and rewriting the script. This meant spending several hours on royalty-free sites like iStockphoto and Shutterstock trying to find decent likenesses of Cat and Bones (which is frustrating because no one really looks like them to me) then spending more time on places like Digital Juice looking for royalty-free music, and toying with the script until the company probably wanted to put a hit out on me. My publisher did the next trailer for FIRST DROP OF CRIMSON, and after discovering what Circle of Seven already found out when it comes to my extremely strong opinions on character images, music, and script, it was mutually decided that for future books, I’d handle my own trailers.
ETERNAL KISS OF DARKNESS was next, and I ended up picking all but two images for it (one was a sword, the other a guy in fog), writing 90% of the script, and picking the music. So when it came time to start thinking about THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE’S trailer, I gave up my you-pick-everything-and-because-I’m-difficult-I’ll-just-replace-it-all-afterward pattern and decided to do it all myself from the start. Script, done. Images, all selected. Music, narrowed it down to four songs. Once I’ve settled on a song, a friend with tech skills is putting it into trailer form for me, and then I’ll buy a Circle of Seven distribution package and have them seed it around the internet. Much smoother process this way, because now the only person I’m driving crazy is myself, heh.
So, if you end up hating the trailer for THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE once it’s out, it’ll be all my fault. And if you end up loving it, well, that’ll be all my fault, too :).
And though all this meant I don’t have snippets, let it not be said that I came here empty handed. If you want to read the first two chapters of THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE, click here.

Jeaniene, I am so excited about the trailer, I am such a nerd and I’m sorry for bothering you about it! I have loved all of the trailers so far so I am sure that this one will be amazing!
Thanks also for sharing the first two chaps of TSOFG, I’m one of those readers who has to read the whole book once I start it so I actually avoid reading free chapters of the books. If I read it it will drive me that much more insane waiting for the book to be released!
February 22nd, get here…NOW! 😀

The trailer that BissFreak did was great, I think the actress would play an excellent Cat if it became a movie/tv series.

Jeaniene.
That was even better than I anticipated (:
Read the first chapter in EKoD and omg, what a start..
Just wanted to tell you (I’m sure you already know, but I’m telling you nevertheless) that your German fans just love you.
I’m really grateful you’re sharing your talent with us!
I’m aware that it may be a little late for me telling you, but there is a literal error in Chapter 2.
Just one letter missing, but I think telling you won’t hurt anybody, right? After they found the bodys of Harris and Shayne, when she thinks about it not being a coincidence, that the ghouls obviously left the bodys for them to find in her old hometown, there you typed county instead of country.
I know, I can be annoying as hell, but maybe books aren’t printed yet.
I actually know that is unreasonable, with it being only a little more then a month ’till the release day left, for which I am overly grateful. Happy and thrilled, too, in fact.
Going to stop writing now, after I told you how amazing I think you are. You are really my favourite writer for about.. hmm.. let’s say two to three years. I am reading a lot of books, both fictional and non-fictional, and you really write the most amazing series!
Sure you know that, so I’ll just thank you very, very much, for being one of the most talented writers I had the pleasure reading books of and finish my babbling.
Wish you the most wonderful weekend.
Jeaniene says
Glad you’re enjoying the books. Re-“there you typed county instead of country.” I double-checked and in the final version the sentence reads “in the same area I grew up in”. I copied the chapters from what must have been a older version of the book (there are always multiple drafts for every book) and so that’s why it’s different from the final version. I’ve updated the chapters now. “County” however would have been correct, because the killings did take place in the county Cat grew up in. “Country” would refer to the entire United States, way too large an area for it to have been significant.
Jessi says
Sorry Jeaniene, my fault (:
But thanks, always good to learn something new.
I thought about the country thing, too and noticed that “country” is a bit of a generalization or exaggeration but then I just thought, who am I to judge?! (:
Didn’t know there actually is the world “county” but good to know, nevertheless. Will use it in my next essay, if possible.
Thank you very much for reading this and for the clarification, too.
Wouldn’t have thought you’d be able to read this.
A devoted fan.

Oh, and I forgot to say: Can’t wait (:
I am very happy that we will have more Cat & Bones books than anticipated..
Missed them a great deal & re-read the books this weekend. After Charles & Mencheres I hope Vlad is next (: Just adore him.

your books are the greastest i cant wait to read this side of the grave, first drop of crimson and enternal kiss. hope u come out with more books.
horsie says
Jeaniene,
I love all of your books. I ecspecially love First Drop of Crimson and Eternal Kiss of Darkness. I like how you brought in love interests for Mencheres and Spade. Can you possibly make a love interest for Ian. He shows up in most every book but is always the flirt and obsessive over most women. There was even a time when Bones said that someday Ian would find someone he loved and was willing to do anything for. I’ve always wondered what type of person could catch and hold his interest. Anyway, it is just an idea. I can’t wait for This Side of the Grave to come out. I’m dying and so is everyone around me because I keep complaining about not having read the book.
Horsie.

Jeaniene you have me just always wanting more! Just read the first 2 chapters and time will never be fast enough for the release date. My husband just smiles at me and says to write it down the calendar so I can work it into our bills! lol I just can’t get enough and can’t wait for the future you bring to us readers who love Cat and Bones…oh can’t forget Denise and Spade. It’s killing me to know what Cat does when she finds out about Denise. Thanks Jeaniene for giving my mind an awesome power of loving to read again!
